Don't Damage Your Liver In Japan

Or lungs or kidneys or heart, etc. An interesting post on Wire’s BodyHack blog on the ongoing problems finding organ donors in Japan.

It’s one of the world’s wealthiest and most prominent nations, but…Japan is the pits when it comes to organ donation — all because no one’s willing to give them up, even if they’re dead.

Inducing a cultural shift in that country, so that organ donation is not faux pas will be a long and difficult process. Hopefully some day, many of these countries with built in aversions to organ donation will be on par with the rest of the world.

That isn’t to say the organ donation rates in the U.S. and Western Europe don’t need improvement. EVERYONE SHOULD BE AN ORGAN DONOR! But clearly it is much worse in Japan.
