Election 2006 Draws To A Close

My old congressional district had their run off election today. Incumbent Henry Bonilla has been beaten.

I for one am surprised. I did not think Ciro Rodriguez could muster all of the Democratic vote from the general election. And Bonilla spent more money than you could shake a stick at.

It is sad to see Bonilla go in a way. As a minority in the Republican party Bonilla was a big fish in a little pond I suppose. When he was first elected, he was the first freshman to serve on the powerful appropriations committee in more than a quarter century. Make no mistake a big part of that was his ethnicity. As well, he was certainly more charismatic and by most accounts a better “politician” than Ciro, probably boosting his effectiveness in Washington.

It is true, especially after redistricting, that Bonilla was far more conservative than the 23rd’s constituents. And in a year when the Republican party paid dearly, it was just too much to overcome to keep his seat.
