Whew, Almost Missed That Rotavirus Diagnosis

Just kidding. Just kidding. These surveys are from NICU & PICU rotations and severe GI disease isn’t exactly something to laugh at. In anycase, the 3 year old 80 hour work week restrictions are reducing Pediatric resident mistakes according to a new study.

With implementation of the ACGME limits, the proportion of residents working >80 hours during their NICU/PICU rotations fell from 49% to 18%. Both residents and program directors rated resident well-being as the factor most improved by the limits.

Further analysis linked the ACGME limits with a reduction in patient errors due to fatigue and with a drop in the proportion of residents falling asleep while driving from work.
