ESPN's Trade Machine Bane To Study Habits

The NBA trade deadline for the 2006-2007 season is tomorrow Thursday, February 22nd at three o’clock. My team – the San Antonio Spurs – should trade for Pau Gasol. A four team trade by ESPN’s Trade Machine works out as:

F Matt Bonner
PG Jacque Vaughn
F Fabricio Oberto
F Jackie Butler
SG Brent Barry
F Mikki Moore (from Nets)
SG Sasha Vujacic (from Lakers)
F Pau Gasol (from Girzzlies)

“In Sporting News, Bigfoot Was Traded To The Spurs…”

Pau Gasol is on the trading block. The Grizzlies GM has made it clear he’s looking for expiring contracts and draft picks. In this trade Jerry West and Co. pick up four contracts that expire at the end of the season, giving him more than $7.5 million in salaries off the books.

For the lack of major talent coming their way the Grizzlies would defintley need some draft picks in this deal…probably New Jersey’s first rounder which they’ll be unlikely to give up. But let us ignore that.

The Lakers would get Jason Kidd, which is a deal that might happen before tomorrow afternoon anyway. They give up what looks like a bunch of players but remember Aaron McKie is basically on permanent/semi-retired IR. The reason the Nets would take Aaron McKie is because this is the last year of his contract.

The real deal breaker of course is the Nets. This deal is really beneficial for everyone but themselves. They’re looking for what the Grizzlies are looking for. They really want Andrew Bynum from the Lakers for Jason Kidd and some expiring contracts. What they get is an overpaid Brent Barry and an overpaid Kwame Brown, both with at least two years on their contracts.

The Nets seem semi-desperate to move Kidd and the talk of the Nets-Lakers or Nets-Clippers trade as I write this is that they were going to sell Kidd for less than market value anyway. Still…while Kwame would probably help the Nets, who lack any sort of inside prescence (like Mikki Moore is a threat in the east), you’d have to be daft to take on the three players they’re getting for Jason Kidd in my proposed trade.

Also, nevermind that Gregg Poppovich and R.C. Buford have basically said they will make no trades before the deadline.

Still, I can dream.
