Avert Your Eyes Or The Talent Will Blind You!

The same day that USC missed out on touted California high school football recruit Dayne Crist (to Notre Dame no less), we pick up former Gatorade National Player of the Year, Mitch Mustain.

Mustain was such a highly recruited quarterback, Arkansas hired his high school coach as offensive coordinator in order to snag him. Now however he’s trying to get out Arkansas as quickly as possible, after his high school coach left, he faced amazing criticism…

Other information obtained under the FOI law reportedly noted contact among Houston Nutt, his brother and running backs coach Danny Nutt and family friend Teresa Prewett on the day Mustain received a harsh e-mail from Prewett. The head coach gave Prewett an official reprimand and barred her from the sidelines during games after the letter was traced to her.

Prewett is a Little Rock physical therapist who helped Danny Nutt rehabilitate after brain surgery in 1998.

The e-mails disparaged Mustain and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who came with the quarterback from Arkansas’ Springdale High School to Arkansas.

“Once again, for the record, I had no prior knowledge of that e-mail and promptly reprimanded Ms. Prewett when I learned of the correspondence,” Nutt wrote.

…and his playing time fell apart.

Mustain is a double edged sword. His mother was part of the group of parents who approached the Arkansas’ AD about their children’s playing time. Which is over the top no matter how you look at it.

But the fact is, as his credentials show, Mustain is an incredible talent. Putting aside any interference issues (which will be much harder for his parents to be part of out in LA), I would take him as a semi-known commodity over Crist.

And it isn’t like USC really needs him. Sure, you always have to be planning three years down the line when recruiting but the QB depth chart is only slightly less ridiculous than the depth chart at half back:

What I can’t figure out is why in the world Mustain would want to come to USC!
